Running in a narrow band from northeastern & eastern Washington to western Scott, then parts of western Clark to Floyd counties are about the closest landforms to mountains you can get in Indiana. “The Knobs” or Knobstone Escarpment is a range of hills rising more than 1000’ that extend into the west & southwestern sides of Louisville, also making up the picturesque, rugged scenery on I-65 south of Louisville in Bullitt County. The hills are easily seen from the Scottsburg Lowland & Illinoian Till Plain of southeastern Indiana, looking west from I-65 in Scott County. They form a mountain-like rise range to the west. It is also this range of high hills that tends to block some of the worst of the cold out of Louisville during the Winter months at times when the bitter cold flow is from the northwest.
